The Ebony Jewelwing Damselfly (Calopteryx maculata) is one of the most striking insects found along streams and wetlands of eastern North America. With a glossy, almost metallic blue-green body and velvety black wings, it hovers and darts over shaded water, catching the light in quick flashes. Unlike most damselflies, the Ebony Jewelwing is large and unmistakable, known for its graceful, fluttering flight and iridescent brilliance. When resting, it folds its wings closed, revealing delicate translucence and subtle colour shifts that inspired this ink.
